Wichita, KS-- Wichita's starting pitcher Junior Guerra was in control the entire game as he only allowed one hit against the Diablos and received help from his offense as they exploded for 15 hits en route to a 10-0 shutout victory Monday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Diablos (11-32) now improve to 0-4 on the year against Wichita. In the first series against the Wingnuts (23-20) swept El Paso and tonight was not much different.
El Paso had a scoring opportunity in the first inning when right fielder Stephen Douglas had an infield hit. He stole second two pitches later and then was sacrificed over to third by second baseman Albenis Machado. Douglas was stranded on third as the next two batters struck out.
After the first inning, Guerra (2-2) did not have any other scoring threat against him until the eighth inning where he was able to get out of a bases loaded jam. Guerra finished the night pitching eight innings giving up no runs on no hits. He had three walks and struck out a game high eight batters. He received the win in the game.
Diablos starting pitcher Reymond Cruz started the game off well as he breezed through the first two innings without giving up a run. In the next two innings he ran into a lot of trouble as he gave up eight runs in the two frames. Wichita scored three in the third and five in the fourth.
Cruz finished the night pitching six and one-thirds innings giving up nine runs, all earned on 13 hits. He walked only one batter and had three strikeouts. He remains winless as he falls to 0-4 on the season.
The Wingnuts exploded for 10 runs off of 15 hits in the game. Six of the 15 hits by Wichita were extra-base hits. Five of the six where doubles and the other hit was an inside the park home run by center fielder Brent Clevlen.
Tomorrow is game two of a four game series between the two teams as the Diablos will send left-handed pitcher Adam Rowe (1-2, 7.25 ERA) to the mound. Rowe in his last start received his first win of the year and he will look to make it two in a row. Game is set for 7:05 pm at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
