DIABLOS DROP ANOTHER CLOSE ONE, 7-6 TO WINNIPEG
EL PASO, TX- El Paso racked up ten more hits off Winnipeg Goldeyes pitching but could not hold onto a 6-2 lead as the visiting Goldeyes rallied for five runs in the final four innings to earn a 7-6 victory over the Diablos. The loss is El Paso's seventh in a row after a 1-1 start to the season.
The game was filled with controversial calls, none having a bigger impact on the game than what looked like an inning-ending double play ball in the fifth for El Paso. With the Diablos up 4-1, starter Freddy Flores got a comebacker off the bat of Amos Ramon, threw to Bryan Frichter second for what appeared to be the first out, who then relayed to first. With Flores running off the field and into the dugout, the umpires ruled that Frichter had not touched second base despite being in the immediate vicinity of the bag. The runner heading into second, Josh Mazzola, eventually scored what proved to be a crucial run later in the inning.
Winnipeg had their share of issues with the umpiring as well. Pitcher Chris Salamida was ejected from the dugout in the seventh inning after arguing balls and strikes, which the Goldeyes had protested several times prior.
Umpiring aside, it was the Diablos' inability to score runs off Winnipeg's bullpen and shaky outings from Marcel Prado and Reyes Dorado (0-1) that doomed the home team's chance for its second win of the season. Prado gave up two runs in the seventh that allowed the Goldeyes to tie the game, and Dorado gave up what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth. Meanwhile, El Paos managed just one more run after touching up Winnipeg starter Matthew Rusch for six in his five innings of work.
The Diablos' offense continued to show signs of emerging from an early season slump. Five different Diablos had RBI's, and the team now has 24 hits over the first two games of the series.
For Winnipeg, rookie Kaohi Downing (3-0) earned his third win in relief and closer Nick Carr pitched a perfect ninth for his third save. Carr has not allowed any of the 16 men he has faced so far this season to reach base.
The Diablos and Goldeyes will conclude their three game series tomorrow night at Cohen Stadium. First pitch between El Paso starter Reymond Cruz and Winnipeg starter Fabian Williamson is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
