DIABLOS ERRORS PROVE COSTLY IN LOSS TO KANSAS CITY
EL PASO, TX- The Dibalos made five errors, two by shortstop Bryan Frichter, and had a comeback attempt fall short in a 9-4 loss to the Kansas City T-Bones on a Memorial Day series opener at Cohen Stadium.
The Diablos outhit Kansas City ten to eight, but the team's defense was not able to make several plays that would have allowed its pitchers to escape innings unscathed. The first came in the second inning when first baseman Javier Brito threw high to second base on a potential double play ball, setting the T-Bones up to score on a sacrifice fly later in the frame to take a 1-0 lead.
El Paso tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI hit from newcomer Nelson Teilon, who played in his first game as a Diablo in 2012. Kansas City responded with a run in the fourth when Brandon Jones, who had reached on the first of Frichter's two errors, crossed home after a wild pitch scooted between the legs of catcher Jonathan Cisneros. The T-Bones then added two more runs in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Gus Miler and a run-scoring single by Sean Henry.
Henry also provided the knockout blow in the seventh, hitting a three-run home run over the left field wall off Diablos reliever Cody Railsback, who had walked the two runners in front of Henry to lead off the inning. That made the score 7-1, and the T-Bones would add one more run in the frame.
The Diablos made an attempt at a comeback with one run in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of a Brian Joynt RBI single and two more in the eighth to pull to within four runs. After Kansas City closed out the scoring with an additional run in their half of the ninth, the Diablos loaded the bases in their final at-bat before Bryan Frichter struck out (the only time he did not reach base) and Uriak Marquez grounded out on the first pitch to end the ballgame.
Colin Allen (0-1) received the loss despite giving up just four hits and two earned runs in his first start of the season. Josh Rainwater (1-2) picked up his first win for Kansas City with seven solid innings of work, allowing just two runs on six hits.
The two teams will resume this three-game series Tuesday night at 7:05. Scheduled to start are Osvaldo Rodriguez (1-1) for El Paso and Nick Singleton (1-1) for the T-Bones.
