EL PASO, TX- The Diablos surrendered four home runs to the visiting Worcester Tornadoes and had a ninth inning rally fall just short in an 11-10 loss in the team's first inter-league game of the 2012 season.
Jerod Edmonson led the way for Worcester, mashing two of the four long balls with each one tying the score. Down 8-6, in the fifth, Edmonson's blast over the right center field wall knotted the score. El Paso would not score again until the final frame.
The Diablos had jumped out to a 6-3 lead thanks to a five run second inning against Tornadoes starter Phil Negus, but Negus (2-4) settled down after allowing eight runs over the first four innings and ended up pitching seven innings to earn the victory.
Patrick Arlis, J.J. Muse, Reid Fronk and Welington Dotel all had multiple hit games for El Paso, but the Diablos couldn't cash in on scoring opportunities in the late innings. That ended up being the difference, as the Tornadoes eventually broke the 8-8 tie on a wild pitch by Kyle Cremers (1-3) in the eighth to go ahead 9-8.
Worcester then added two insurance runs in the ninth off Reyes Dorado to take an 11-8 lead into the Diablos final at-bat. El Paso would draw to within one on Daniel Nelson's first home run as a member of the Diablos, but couldn't complete the comeback as closer Nick Serino earned his fourth save for the Tornadoes.
The loss snaps El Paso's season-high four game winning streak and drops the team to 16-30 overall. The Diablos will send out Edgar Garcia in game two on Sunday to try to even the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
